Botox or Bangs

November 17, 2018

There was a time, not too long ago, when I would giggle to myself at a grown woman with bangs.  You see, back in the 80s's we all had bangs, so I would always assume this woman was about my age and just hadn't changed her look in 30+ years. Now, however, I think she might be on to something...

I have reached the point in my life that my forehead shows every emotion I have ever expressed, even if I'm not expressing one at this particular moment.  Yes, I have wrinkles. Oddly enough, I don't mind seeing them on other women, but I don’t like seeing them on myself. While I'm not old enough for a facelift (at least I don’t think so), I'm definitely prime for Botox. My hesitation isn't because I'm afraid of putting chemicals in my body, but the price of beauty keeps going up exponentially each year.  Should I do laser, get fillers, a chemical peel, or spend $50 on bangs?

This time around I'm opting for the latter. I tend to bruise easily, so fillers are out of the question and there's no predicting how long my skin will flake after a peel or laser treatment, so they are out too.  Additionally, I'm on a bit of a budget right now so an inexpensive hair style is my best option; however, I need to find a style of bangs that won't make me look like I'm trying to recapture my youth.

21 Century Bangs

The Betty Page look is for the girl who claims to not follow trends. She has an in-your-face personality to go with this severe look. If you don't like it, don't look at her; you won’t offend her.

The Little Girl bang is for the DIY girl.  After all, how hard can it be; all you have to do it is cut straight across, right?  Before you dive in, take into account that if it is not a good look for you, you will end up looking like you are trying to look like your daughter's BFF.  “Desperate to look young” isn’t a good look on anyone.

The Easy-Breazy Side Sweep happens to be my favorite style because it looks so low maintenance and carefree. Unfortunately, this seems to be the hardest for me to duplicate. It's one of those cuts that your stylist whips together so easily that you're convinced you can do it on your own—PSYCH (another 80's reference)!

The One Eye Monster is worn by two very different women. You will see it on ultra-confident women who are out to seduce your man!  However, many women who are extremely shy also wear their hair in their face to hide from awkward social situations.  So, how do you know how to distinguish the two? Hint: look for the one in the low-cut top and push-up bra, then steer your husband away.

The Face Framing cut is perfect for softening up an aging face because it hides lines on the forehead and the crows feet when you smile or squint! Additionally, it’s great those who have given up on trying to style their own hair.  Tell your hair stylist that you need something that is just one step beyond wash and wear (l call it "brush and go"). I agree it’s not very fashion-forward, but at least it looks like you're making an effort to work with what you've got.

Lasers, and fillers, and peels, oh my!

If you can afford the luxuries of the scientific advancements in the beauty industry, find a surgeon who's "work" you like as well as one you can trust not to up-sell you on your first visit.  Research this surgeon on-line as well as ask to speak with other patients.  Lastly, be leery of physicians who do all the talking and don't stop to listen to your needs or understand your vision.  With that said, be sure you really want what you are asking for.

Oh, and if you decide to save your money, be careful with the curling iron; they are much hotter nowadays than they were back in the 80’s.  You will have a blister on your face before you realize

you even feel the singe!
